What is the Opportunities Farm?

The Opportunities Farm is a gift received by the SDSU Foundation in the spring of 2001. Valued at $1.6 million, the 1,120 acres of land and feedlot facilities provide an outstanding opportunity to conduct research and education for SDSU students. LeRoy Poppens, the benefactor of the farm gift, envisioned the Opportunities Farm as a working farm where student can experience a hands-on livestock and agronomy research and teaching facility.

A grant from the state of South Dakota in 2003 and an investment by the SDSU Foundation enabled the Opportunities Farm to construct three types for feedlot systems (confined, partially confined and open) to compare environmental impacts, livestock performance, physiological stress measurements, and selected nutritional trials. Costs of operating each of these systems along with performance data will be shared with South Dakota producers through the SDSU Cooperative Extension Service specialists and educators.
